The services offered by Casa Amiga Crisis Center A.C. would be impossible without the social consciousness, commitment, and solidarity of volunteers, who maintain the firm conviction to cooperate and share their time, experience, and motivation with the people we attend in Casa Amiga every day.

Volunteers are welcome to participate in four different areas: attend the telephone at times when the center is closed, advice and counselling, administration, and prevention.  If you are interested in one of these voluntary tasks or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

1.  TELEPHONE ATTEND VOLUNTEERS

OBJECTIVE:
Attend the crisis line at the telephone. Receive phone calls from victims of violence. Offer help, information, orientation, and emotional support.

PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEER:
People with special sensibility who are able to offer help and friendship to the person who calls creating a confident and anonymous atmosphere, without judging, trying to influence, or expressing own opinions.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

 •  Take a strict control of incoming calls
 • Register all phone calls
 • Identify the strengths and weaknesses during the talk
 • Maintain a close contact with the coordinator of this area
 • Assist in trainings and activities of Casa Amiga

GENERAL ORIENTATION TO FOLLOW DURING A PHONE CALL:

 1. Speak in a friendly and tranquilizing tone.
 2. Ask if the person is in danger at this moment.
 3. Ask: How can I help you?
 4. Ask: What is your motive to call Casa Amiga?
 5. Ask for a telephone number if it is necessary to call back.
 6. Ask: What would you like to do?
 7. Help to find different options to solve the problem (if it is an abused person ask if this person wants to give the name of the aggressor or not).
 8. Ask if the person would like to add something.
 
2.  COUNSELING VOLUNTEERS

OBJECTIVE:
Realize the first interview with people in a polite, friendly, and human way. Orientate people who look for psychological, legal, or medical help.

PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEER:
Superior studies in psychology. Realize the first contact with people looking for help. Fill out the format of the first interview. If it is necessary: send people to other institutions if their problem is not related to violence.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

 • Fill out the form of the first interview
 • Transfer the form to the people at the reception
 • Ask psychologists for advice
 • Assist any training or activity at Casa Amiga
 • Take part at the meetings of volunteers two Saturdays a month
 • Promote volunteer work at Casa Amiga, invite people
 
3.  ADMINISTRATION VOLUNTEERS

OBJECTIVE:
Support the administrative and operative area of the center.

PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEER:
Person with a high sense of altruism with the willingness to spend time and realize tasks of organization at the center.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

 • Organize pantry
 • Classify clothes and donations
 • Organize library
 • Reception
 • Accommodate playing area
 • Help to take care of children
 • Help to organize papers and recyclable material
 
4.  PREVENTION VOLUNTEER

OBJECTIVE:
Multiply the effect of prevention through orientation talks and puppet theatre presentations in plants (maquiladoras), educational institution, and community centers.

PROFILE OF VOLUNTEER:
Person with interest in public activities of prevention with capacity to work in a team and under pressure to impart public talks and organize presentations for children.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

 • Assist talks about orientation and prevention
 • Help to organize, plan, and present puppet theater
 • Assist any training or activity at Casa Amiga
 • Take part at the meetings of volunteers two Saturdays a month
 • Promote volunteer work at Casa Amiga, invite people
